Centifolia is also produced commercially. As with many floral essential oils, the flowers produce only tiny quantities of oil per blossom, so Rose oil is traditionally very expensive. The flowers also need special treatment: handpicking, followed by extraction with solvents to obtain the concrete (or absolute), which is a waxy solid at room temperature; and finally, an extraction of the concrete to obtain the essential oil – also known as an otto. The color of the otto varies, but is usually a somewhat viscous yellow.
