Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Illinois Bunn Special Pocket Watch 16s 21j Type III Model 14 Lever Set 60-hour 1928 Runs Offered for sale is a 1928 Illinois Watch Company Bunn Special pocket watch in excellent running condition. The Bunn Special pocket watch was named after John W. Bunn, one of the founders of the Illinois Watch Company in 1876. The Illinois Bunn Special is probably one of the most well-known names in pocket watches. Also included is a newer collection box with the watch. The date of the watch was determined by its number (5110838) located on the inside of the watch. It is a size 16s, Type III, Model 14, lever set watch in an unmarked 10-karat gold-filled coin-edge case. The 21 jewels are rubies. It is a 60-hour watch. Its face has a white glass enamel double sunk dial with black Arabic numerals and blued-steel hands. The movement runs flawlessly. It winds easily, and the lever sets without issue. There were only 1,000 of these watches made in 1928 in Springfield, IL. This Bunn Special is both railroad approved and railroad grade. Railroad grade simply means a watch that was approved by a particular railroad organization for use by conductors on their rail. Railroad approved meant that the watch would remain accurate in heat, cold, and regardless of how much power or wind-up was left on a watch’s main spring. Position adjustments were also important in these hand-wound watches. Railroad approved watches needed to tell time accurately — typically, plus or minus 3 seconds a day — regardless of whether they were held upright, tilted left, tilted right, face-down or face-up. These details were important because a railroader’s watch ensured safe operation of trains. This watch is an adjusted temperature, 6-position watch. Although made in 1928, it complies with the mandatory features established in 1930 for railroad approved watches. These features included a minimum number of jeweled bearings or bearing surfaces (usually 21) for watch gears, white dials with black Arabic-only, no Roman, numerals that ensured easy reading in dim light, and an internal setting lever that prevented railroaders from accidentally re-setting the watch while working. To open the watch, both flawless front bezel and back cover unscrew. A small lever comes up out of the side of the case to enable setting. A stem on the top of the watch winds it. The case shows some wear from use. Much information is engraved on the back of the watch movement. (See photos) The Bunn Special was a mainstay in the Illinois line up of fine Railroad Grade Pocket Watches.
