The book contains eleven medium-length literary explorations—slices of Americana—that first appeared in THE NEW YORKER among the years 1945 to 1948 when the rascally HAROLD ROSS still ran that magazine. The pieces are written in a low-key but intelligent style and each piece seems to have a knack for inspiring the reader to care, abruptly, about a subject he or she previously hadn’t thought much about. BERTON ROUECHÉ later became known for his excellent “Annals of Medicine” series in THE NEW YORKER & the subsequent “Medical Detectives” series of books. In these pieces, ROUECHÉ visits & writes about the following places & people: • “THE SMELL OF MONEY”: About a mink farm run by Emmy Zichner near Peekskill, New York. • “A WET WIND OFF NORTHEAST”: About a maple farm run by DeWitt W.
