Notes: Kyzikos (Cyzicus) was an ancient Greek city in Mysia, Asia Minor in modern day Turkey. It was located on the the southern shore of the Propontis at a tombolo, or isthmus, which is said to have been originally an island in the Sea of Marmara only to be connected to the mainland in historic times either by artificial means or an earthquake. The city was said to have been founded by Pelasgians from Thessaly, according to tradition at the coming of the Argonauts. Kyzikos has a rich history that follows that of much of Asia Minor. During the Peloponnesian War (431–404 BC) Cyzicus was subject to the Athenians and Lacedaemonians alternately. In the naval Battle of Cyzicus in 410 during the Peloponnesian War, an Athenian fleet routed and completely destroyed a Spartan fleet. At the Peace of Antalcidas (in 387 BC), like the other Greek cities in Asia, it was given over to Persia and the Achaemenids in negotiations by the Spartan. Alexander the Great later captured it from the Persians in 334 BC and was later claimed to be responsible for the land bridge connecting the island to the mainland. The history of the town in Hellenistic times is closely connected with that of the Attalids of Pergamon, after whose downfall it came into direct relations with Rome. Cyzicus was held for the Romans against King Mithridates VI of Pontus who reportedly besieged it with 300,000 men in 74 BC, but it withstood the siege. The loyalty of the city was rewarded by an extension of territory and other privileges as the Romans recognized its municipal independence and Cyzicus continued as the leading city of Northern Mysia as far as Troas. Under Tiberius, it was incorporated into the Roman Empire but remained the capital of Mysia (afterwards, Hellespontus) and became one of the great cities of the ancient world. The site of anceint Cyzicus, located on the Erdek and Bandırma roads, is protected by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture. Coinage: The coinage of the city begins in the seventh or sixth century BC and consists principally of staters and hectae composed of electrum or pale gold. These coins of Cyzicus, together with the Persian darics, constituted the staple of the gold currency of the whole ancient world until such time as they were both superseded by the gold staters of Philip and Alexander the Great. The επισημον or badge of the city of Cyzicus was the tunny-fish, shoals of which were continually passing through the Propontis on their way from the Euxine to the Aegean sea. This fish appears invariably on the electrum coinage of the town-on the oldest stater as the type, on later coins as an adjunct or lesser type in addition to the principal device, which latter, contrary to the usual practice, is at Cyzicus merely an exaggerated magisterial symbol, usurping the place of the main type, while the tunny, the real επισημον, is relegated to a subordinate position.
