26 Hardbound Issues SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN MAGAZINE July thru December 1913 over 500 heavily illustrated pages This is a 100+ year old 7-½ pound half-leather hardbound book measuring 1 x 11-¼ x 16 inches containing ALL heavily illustrated, fully indexed issues of Scientific American magazine from 5 July thru 27 December 1913 (Volume 109 issues 1 thru 26), completely readable and in very good used condition with nothing cut out. Some of the articles in these wonderful 100+ year old Scientific American magazines include the Genealogy of the Motorcycle 1868-1913, Teaching Soldiers to Shoot, Icebergs, Decline of the US Navy, a Searchlight Handgun, Airplanes and Dirigibles, Panama-Pacific Exhibition,…. …. Pasadena’s Beautiful Bridge, Cork Pullers, the USS Texas, the Ten Greatest Inventions of Our Time, the Los Angeles Aquaduct, Panama Canal, Electric Vehicles, Passaic Valley Sewer System, Gordon Bennett Cup Race, Rudolf Diesel, Pegoud’s Remarkable Flying, Trains, Night War Attacks, Ships, Subways, Refrigeration, Manufacturing Paper, Zeppelin Disasters, Diesel Locomotive, Hydroplanes, …. …. New Haven Railroad Disaster, Aerial Warfare, Cape Cod Canal, St. Lawrence River Ship Channel, Improved Roads, Buying and Selling Gold and Silver, Japanese Battle Cruiser KONGO, War Against Field Mice in France, America’s Cup, Carrier Pigeons in France, the Reflector Telescope, the new Schoop process of metal plating with an air gun, etc., etc. Two of the articles involve prominent American/British aviator Colonel F.S. Cody. The first tells of his proposed east to west transatlantic flight, and the second article announces his death at Aldershot, England in the crash of an airplane he built and flew. Some of the full-page color ads in these magazines include ads for Waterman pens, Victor Talking Machines, Fatima cigarettes, Columbia Gramophone, Pierce Arrow automobiles, Velvet tobacco, etc. Black & white full-page ads include advertising for Firestone Tire, Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Maxwell, Studebaker, Jeffery, Chalmers, Winton, Packard, Lozier, Moon, Hupmobile, Haynes, and Marmon cars, Remington typewriters, General Electric, Delco, Linotype machines, etc. In terms of condition there are only two small defects in the 500+ pages that warrant mentioning. Volume CIX, No.1 has 2-inch wide triangular piece of the upper right corner of the front cover missing (the rest of the cover is in fine condition), and Volume CIX, No.22 has a tear from the opening edge inward with no paper missing and not affecting readability of the words. That is it! Our photos show only the actual book that we are offering for sale. It is in fine used condition and absolutely fascinating reading. Two issues of the magazine bear a medium blue round impression of a previous owner’s rubber stamp, but unfortunately the lettering appears to be Cyrillic and we can not read it, but we show it in one of our pictures.
