This listing is for a nice deck of playing cards from THE RAU STORE. The condition of the cards is nice. The box was opened, however the cards are in like new condition The box is in nice condition. The seal and Internal Revenue Stamp are included. The RAU STORE was located in Chicago Heights Illinois and was purchased by Carson, Pirie Scott in 1959. Per a Chicago Heights historical association: One hundred years ago THE RAU STORE was a retailing institution to the shoppers of Chicago Heights, growing with the city itself from its early days with a small storefront and goods delivered by horse and wagon. As Rau’s grew their downtown store changed location several times, most well-remembered for the NW corner of 16th & Otto Boulevard, including a major renovation into the streamlined Art Deco style illustrated here that was so popular in the Twenties and Thirties – the same style as Bloom High School built in this same era. Like so many other smaller department stores born during the heyday of this retail format in the 19th Century, The Rau Store was bought by a larger competitor. In Rau’s case it was Carson Pirie Scott & Co., seemingly a perfect match continuing the Rau tradition offering both broad merchandise choices and finer brand lines making it a destination for quality goods, memorable gifts and holiday shopping memories. The city implemented a downtown revival plan in the Seventies hoping to retain Carson’s as a downtown anchor store but the plan arrived too late – the retailer already committed to a bigger store in the giant new indoor Lincoln Mall opening in nearby Matteson, 1973. The store stood vacant for several years before being cleared. Finally after a successful five-decade run, Carsons and the entirety of Lincoln Mall also were closed and razed, victims of changing consumer shopping preferences to new retailing concepts – not unlike the retailing in downtown Chicago Heights one-half century earlier PLEASE SEE MY OTHER LISTINGS AND STORE FOR SIMILAR ITEMS AND COMBINE FOR THE LOWEST POSTAGE.
